The ultimate goal for every website design is to make is as usable to users as possible. From a business perspective better usability means more visitors, more customers, more sales.

Let us share with you some basic principles of usability, which are good to keep in mind when you develop a website.

Put important design elements where the user expects them to appear

  • Navigation - horizontal up or vertical left menu; leave it in the same location on all pages of the site!
  • Ssign up / sign in button - top right
  • Search box - top right, near the navigation
  • Subscribe to RSS - top right
  • BUY button - next to the price of a product
  • If possible, use text instead of icons, or icons with text

Do not give users too many choices, this will confuse them

  • Make sure the main navigation does not contain more than 7-8 main sections
  • A single promotion with a clear call to action is always better than 5 offers with similar features
  • Large, visible selection of item(s) is always better than putting everything your company does or offers on one single page

A click away

  • Use flat structure, if possible - the most important information should be easily accessible from every page on the site, two clicks away from the home page or any product page at most.
  • If you sell something, the BUY button must be clearly visible and users must immediately spot it on your pages.
  • Expand footer if needed and put the most important pages there. This is good both for customers and for the indexing of your site (especially if you have no sitemap).

Keep it short

  • If you can say something in one sentence, say it in one sentence;
  • Use short titles of sections in the navigation;
  • Use meaningful URLs;
  • Add short and meaningful product descriptions;
  • Use shortcuts to each page (breadcrumbs).
